Ayurvedic Concept: Diabetes mellitus, known as "Madhumeha" in ancient Ayurvedic science, is characterized by honey-like urine (sweet urine) due to derangement in glucose metabolism. Madhumeha (Diabetes) is one of the twenty urinary anomalies (Pramehas) described in Ayurveda. It is caused by excessive Vata (air) vitiation in the body. As per Ayurveda the main biological dosha (humor) involved in all the pramehas (anomalies) is Kapha (water) and the most affected parts in the body are fatty layers (Meda), lymph's (Kleda), pancreas (Kloma), immunity (Ojas) and urinary tract. The problem, diabetes mellitus (Madhumeha), occurs when vitiated Vata (air) attracts the vital essence (ojas immunity) and carries it to the renal tract and the formidable disorders of diabetes are born.

In Ayurveda there are anti-hyperglycemic herbs, (also researched by modern science) which help in maintaining proper glucose metabolism and reactivation of insulin receptors. They help promote the production of insulin, increase the uptake of glucose by target cells, activate the liver, protect the nephrons, have anti-oxidant effect and check oxidative damage. They reduce the complication of diabetic mellitus (Madhumeha) by interfering with the mechanism involved in their creation. They normalize the vitiated biological humors and have immuno modulator properties. These herbs are also recommended in all the other urinary anomalies as discussed above in Vata (air), Pitta (fire) and Kapha (water).

Note: Anti-hyperglycemic herbs as per Ayurveda mean that these can lower the elevated blood sugar level up to the normal healthy sugar level. (Not below the normal healthy sugar level) and this process is also slow and steady.

Symptoms due to Kapha (water): The urinary anomalies associated with Kapha (water) are diabetes insipidus (excessive urination), alimentary glycosuria (increased glucose secretion) due to decreased glucose absorption in the elementary canal, phosphaturia (presence of phosphate crystals in urine), acetonuria (Presence of acetones), chyluria (presence of chyl-an end product of digestion), spermaturia (presence of sperms), lithuria (presence of fine crystals of stone) and albuminuria (presence of albumin).

Symptoms due to Pitta (fire): The urinary anomalies associated with Pitta (fire) are alkaline urination, hematuria (presence of blood in the urine), biluria (presence of bile in urine), and emoglobinuria (Presence of hemoglobin in the urine).

Symptoms due to Vata (air): The conditions due to Vata (air) are pyuria (presence of pus in the ine), lipuria (presence of fat in urine), incontinence of urine and diabetes mellitus (Madhumeha).

Glucoside jamboline is said to have the power of checking the pathological conversion of starch into sugar in cases of increased production of glucose. It diminishes the quantity of sugar in urine and allays the unquenchable thirst caused by diabetes.

Indian Kino Tree (Pterocarpus Marsupium) (Bijasar or Vijaysar) (Malabar kino):- It restores the normal insulin production of pancreas and stabilizes the normal sugar levels by hindering the absorption of glucose in the intestine.

Description: These herbs decrease the excess fat in the body and insulin resistance. They increase the utilization of glucose by targets cells, normalize all the three doshas (humors), decrease the increased fat deposition in the body, stop sugar cravings, support proper function of the pancreas, maintain healthy digestion, act as rejuvenative for Kapha (water) dominating individuals, revitalize body and optimize many body functions. Food to Favor: Soup of grams, Moong (yellow lentils or green entils), unpolished rice, barley or oat flour, bitter gourd, garlic, fruits and water melon, fenugreek, cucumber, cactus.

Food to Avoid: Avoid high calorie diet, fatty and sweet diet high in carbohydrates. Limit the consumption of alcohol, heavy meals, sweet potatoes, seafood (sea meat), junk food, cakes, sweet breads, pastries, chocolates, grapes and other high sugar containing fruits.

Serving Size: Take 2 capsules with breakfast, 2 capsules 30 minutes before lunch and dinner, with water. If needed take 2 capsules at bedtime 2 hours after dinner. Reduce dose as needed.
